According to recent studies, most Filipino search activity on the internet involved, in one form or another, local celebrities. From scandals to wardrobe malfunctions to breakups, Filipinos still love to learn about the latest happenings about the lives of their favorite celebrities. Some say this is a good thing, some say this is a bad thing. I say this is ridiculous.
If more of us focus on more important issues, then we won’t be in the rut that we are in. Don’t you realize that we are simply giving more money to these celebrities and “important people” by continually being hooked on them? Money that could have been used elsewhere such as donations or creating new opportunities for jobs?
There are far more important issues regarding our country other than a starlet accidentally showing her boob to a national telecast. Then when everything around you falls apart you blame the government. Yes, we elected them to lead, but we have to follow too!
We all dream of one day this country that I love will go back to its former glory. But the effort should not just be on our leaders. Yes it is true that they suck and a lot of them are in it for themselves, but that just means that we have to focus on them even more. If we spend more time learning about the background of a certain candidate rather than who would be the next singing sensation for the following month or two, then maybe we could elect better leaders.
Don’t deny it, when it came to voting for senators you simply just shaded the “bilog na mukhang itlog” by the names you recognized; and they are mainly former celebrities. If you only knew who the other people are, you would know that those you did not know were more capable in leading our country.
It just amazes me how the Filipino people love to look up upon these steroid, plastic surgery, silicone filled celebrities are. Yes, we all would love to live their lives of luxury. But that does not mean our lives should revolve around theirs.
And on another note, some of you would say that they are the only “getaway” you have from your own miserable life, then maybe you should spend a bit more time developing your own skills rather than just ogling at them so that you can get away from your rut.
My two pesos.
